GATEWAY BANK IN THE NEWS
Pittsburgh Business Times - July 21, 2006
STARTUP BANKS FIND THEIR PLACE
While their numbers aren't large, startups look to fill community need.
It's rare enough to be a startup bank in the Pittsburgh area. Gateway Bank of Pennsylvania is only the third such enterprise in more than 40 years. But CEO Bill Burt is about to reach for another distinction. Gateway, which launched two years ago in McMurray, expects to open a second branch, probably in the Cranberry area, in early 2007.
Gateway is a full-fledged community bank, a genre that has been squeezed by acquisitions in this market.
"Basically, we believed there was a need for a local, community bank to serve customers, consumers and professionals and small and medium-sized businesses and their owners," said Burt. "Large banks have gotten away from this. We're locally owned, have a local board, an experienced management team and local decision making."
Burt knows firsthand about acquisition-driven banks. He was part of it as an executive of Integra Financial Corp., cobbled together from several Western Pennsylvania entities including Equibank - where Burt started his career in 1970 - Pennbancorp, First Seneca Bank and Union National Bank to become the region's third-largest financial institution until it was acquired by National City Corp., Cleveland. Burt worked for National City Bank of Pennsylvania prior to starting Gateway.
"Cranberry and McMurray/Peters Township, where we are now, are the two fastest-growing areas in the tri-state area," Burt said. "We'll continue to look at other growth areas (for branches)."
He couldn't say exactly how big Gateway intends to get, but Burt was adamant at making sure it does not become too big.
"We want to keep that small-bank mentality," he said. "It's hard to put a number on it, but if we are $66 million (in assets) after two years, we're hopeful we can be at least $250 million after five years and with several branches."
Robert Kerr, executive vice president and chief lending officer, said Gateway currently has $55 million in loans and commitments." And 70 percent of that is on the business side," he said.
It took roughly two years to develop Gateway. The young bank was funded by close to $15 million raised by its executives and board of directors, many of whom hailed from large banks in the area. Kerr is a veteran of PNC Financial Services Group Inc. He and Burt insisted that two tracts Gateway is determined to avoid are a public offering and/or a sale.
"We raised our money ourselves and have sufficient capital to grow the way we want to grow," Burt said.
Gateway's community bank focus is a different game plan from the region's other startup banks, which were highly specialized. To date, none has expanded beyond a single branch.
When Pennsylvania Capital Bank launched Downtown in 1990, it was the region's first new bank in 30 years. Created by executives of Mid Atlantic Capital Group, Downtown, and veterans of PNC Financial Services Group Inc., it provided specialized services to high net worth clients. In 2001, Pennsylvania Capital was acquired by Three Rivers Bancorp, which was bought by Sky Financial Group Inc. a year later.
Pennsylvania Capital alumni launched Enterprise Bank in Allison Park in 1998 to concentrate on entrepreneurs and small business owners. It is satisfied with the niche and expects to remain a single branch operation.
There are several theories why Western Pennsylvania hasn't been fertile ground for startup banks. The most prevalent is that the region lacks the repeat entrepreneurs common in Philadelphia who start banks, grow and sell them, then use the money to do it all over again.
It's also pointed out that consolidation here has mostly been confined to small institutions; it's the consolidation of banks with assets between $100 million and $2 billion that create opportunities for newcomers to pick up talent and customers. There also is the claim that the region already has too many banks.
Pittsburgh is an exception to a nationwide boom in bank startups, said Arnold Danielson, CEO of the Rockville, MD-based consultancy Danielson Associates. But Danielson, who produces a quarterly report on bank startups and has consulted to some of these operations, scoffs at the notion that Pittsburgh is overbanked.
So does Len Carroll, former Integra CEO and managing partner of Seneca Capital Management, a Sewickley-based private equity firm. Carroll, a director of Gateway, quickly sketched the local banking landscape.
"Pittsburgh is a highly concentrated market with three financial institutions, a quartet of regional banks that have become avid acquirers, and a shrinking sector of community banks," he said. "Gateway is a rare bird in Western Pennsylvania."
Seneca, he said, has been approached by groups here and in other parts of the country that "would like us to consider investing in a startup bank in their community." Carroll, who has a vacation home in Arizona, said there are "at least four" successful startups located within 10 blocks of his Phoenix residence.
Seneca is currently raising a $40 million fund to invest in startup and recently chartered banks. Carroll said he was tapping area banks as well as former industry executives. Startup banks, he said, tend to be good investments, producing a solid return for backers.
Seneca's not alone: MJR Financial Group LLC, Allentown, PA, is raising a $50 million fund to be invested in startup banks across the country. It expects its first bank will open in Baltimore, but has an eye on launching a Pittsburgh enterprise in the Cranberry area over the next few years.
"In Pittsburgh, the driving force (for MJR) is the lack of de novos," said MJR partner Rich Hooper. "We thought a good community bank would do well."
Burt and Kerr believe having local roots make all the difference.
"If they're coming in from out of state," Burt said, "they'll have quite a challenge. Anyone who thinks they can come in, put in capital and start a bank, well, all I can say is, 'Good luck.'" |
